Coast to Coast Walk - Wainwright
by: Martin Wainwright

The Coast to Coast Walk, originally devised by the legendary Alfred Wainwright, has become one of Britain's most popular long distance routes. It starts at St Bees on the Cumbrian Coast and runs for 192 miles (307km) to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea, passing through three of Britain's loveliest National Parks, the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.

Martin Wainwright's description of the route is divided into twelve chapters, each covering one day's walk, and is accompanied by Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 mapping and colour photographs. There are also brief essays on features or places of particular historical or landscape interest throughout the text. An introduction provides an overall historical background to the area, including information on local history, wildlife and archaeology plus advice for readers planning the walk. A Useful Information section at the end gives details of organisations which provide advice or information on matters such as travel and accommodation. This guide can be recommended as a reliable and easy to use companion that will keep you informed and entertained along the journey.

The starting points of the twelve day stages are as follows: St Bees; Ennerdale Bridge; Rosthwaite; Patterdale; Shap; Kirkby Stephen; Keld; Reeth; Richmond; Ingleby Cross; Clay Bank Top; Glaisedale.

Coast to Coast Walk - Marsh
by: Terry Marsh

This is the second edition of this guide to the Coast to Coast trail popularised by Wainwright. The walk from St Bees Head in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay on Yorkshire's east coast is now one of the most popular long distance walks in Britain. At 178 miles (300km) long, the trail can easily be walked within a two week holiday period.

The guide is in three sections. The first gives the route description, from west to east, annotated as appropriate with notes of geological, historical, industrial, sociological and natural history interest. The second section gives the route description only in an east to west direction, cross-referenced to the points of interest. The final section comprises practical information including an accommodation listing and even names of doctors. The guide has OS mapping of the route and includes numerous full colour photographs taken by the author.

Regarding the route, the author says in his introduction - 'His [Alfred Wainwright's] chosen route was but one of many possibilities, and the man himself encouraged walkers to devise their own. So, the present walk differs significantly in a number of ways. Being environmentally and ecologically more friendly, it ostracises much of the road walking that bedevilled Wainwright's plan, and overcomes the indifference he often displayed towards rights of way, or the lack of them. What results is a tantalising and inspiring excursion to rank with the finest of this country's long distance walks, and all of it on established right of way or permissive paths.'
