Hadrian's Wall Path - Burton
by: Anthony Burton

Hadrian's Wall Path is the popular National Trail of some 84 miles (135km) linking Wallsend, near Newcastle upon Tyne, with Bowness-on-Solway on England's west coast. The Path shadows, for its greater part, the historic line of Hadrian's Wall; it lies within a World Heritage Site, and there are many opportunities to explore the fascinating history of four centuries of Roman rule. It is also a walk of dramatic contrasts, starting amid bustling, redeveloped Newcastle and finishing on the lonely shores of the Solway Firth with some stunning countryside in between.

This is the complete, official guide for the long distance walker or the weekend stroller and it contains an excellent introduction to the history of the wall. All you need is this one book. It contains the entire route split into convenient sections; 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey maps for each section, marked with points of special interest; walks to and from major archaeological sites off the main route; route information on each section, with colour photographs and notes on nearby features; background information on archaeology, local history, wildlife, geology, industry and land use; details of public transport, villages on or near the route with facilities for walkers, useful organisations and accommodation.

Hadrian's Wall Path, 84 miles (135km) from end to end, follows the course of northern Europe's largest surviving Roman monument, the 2nd century fortification built on the orders of the Emperor Hadrian in AD122 and now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Opened in 2003, the path crosses the beautiful border country between England and Scotland. This week long walk is regarded as one of the least challenging of the National Trails.

The unique mapping features include walking times, directions, tricky junctions, places to stay, places to eat and points of interest. Itineraries cover hiking the 84 mile route in its entirety or sampling the delights on day walks or short breaks and include detailed public transport information for all access points. There is practical information for all budgets, what to see, where to stay, where to eat including pubs, hotels, B&B, camping and hostels. Walk Hadrian's Wall

A Boot Up Hadrian's Wall
by: Rodney Legg

Britain's Roman Wall is one of the great frontiers of the classical world. Ten circular walks are featured in this pocket-sized book, each maximising the visual experiences both of archaeology and the landscape. They vary in length from 3 to 8 miles and are aimed particularly at families and groups of friends out to enjoy the incomparable World Heritage Site. Starting locations are scattered from an abbey at Lanercost, Cumbria to a fort at South Shields, which was the main North Sea supply base. In between, across wild hill country in Northumberland National Park, surviving sections of Hadrian's Wall are packed with remains of garrisons, mile-castles, turrets and linear defences, often with their own local museums.

The format and descriptions make for trouble-free walking with the bonus of all the history you can see being flagged-up en route. Words and photographs convey the distinctive character of each length while specially prepared mini-maps are also easy to follow. All the walks are circular and begin at a car park or safe parking location with the grid reference provided. Public transport options are given where available. The walks are graded between one and three boot symbols with three boots the hardest. The handy size of this guide also means it will slip easily into your pocket.

The walk locations are: Lanercost and Haytongate; Bankshead and Wall Bowers; Birdoswald and Gilsland; Greenhead and Thirlwall; Carvoran and Great Chesters; Vindolanda and Cawfield Crags; Housesteads and Hotbank; Carrawbrough and Chesters; Heaven Fields and Wall; Arbeia and South Shields.
