by: South Somerset District CouncilThe Liberty Trail is based on the stories of some of the men who joined the Monmouth Rebellion in June of 1685. Guiding you from Ham Hill in South Somerset to the Dorset coast at Lyme Regis, The Liberty Trail tells the stories of six Rebels from villages along the route. With green sprigs in their hats to mark their support for Monmouth, and using farm sythes for weapons, some of them may have walked to Lyme to join Monmouth along the same paths that you will follow.
This guide is designed as a loose leaf pack. The route is divided into six sections and each has its own laminated sheet giving directions, a sketch map, describing points of interest and telling the story of one of the six Rebels. There is a seperate sheet providing practical information about accommodation, transport and places to eat. The total length of the route is 28 miles, so it can be accomplished in 2/3 days. The Leland Trail links with the Liberty Trail at Ham Hill, so by combining the two a longer walk can be planned.
