by: Anne-Marie EdwardsThis is a book for two kinds of walker: those who like an afternoon stroll from a good pub and those who enjoy the challenge of a long distance path walked over a period of days. The Solent Way stretches for 70 miles from near Christchurch in Dorset along the Hampshire coast to Emsworth, close to the Sussex Border. The scenery along the route is rich in its variety: from the bird-haunted marshes of Keyhaven and Pennington; the remote nature reserves around Warsash and Titchfield Haven; and the wide heaths and ancient woodland of the New Forest; to the historic waterfronts of Southampton and Portsmouth and bustling riverside villages like Hamble, colourful with fishing boats and yachts.
The book combines information on the whole length of the Way with simple circular pub walks along the route. The walks vary in length from 3 to 8 miles and the directions are clearly presented and accompanied by handy sketch maps. Each pub is described in full with details of its history and character, how to get there and where to park. All are surrounded by excellent walking country.
The walk locations are as follows, each covering a section of the Solent Way: Christchurch and Stanpit Marsh; Barton on Sea; Milford on Sea, Hurst Spit and Keyhaven; Pennington and Oxey Marshes; Lymington and Pylewell Park; Beaulieu and Bucklers Hard; Hythe Pier, Southampton; Netley Abbey and Westwood; Hamble and Burlesdon; Hook-with-Warsash Nature Reserve; The Meon Shore, Titchfield Haven; Southsea Common; Farlington Marshes; Langstone and Emsworth.
