Adventurous Pub Walks in Warwickshire
by: Roger Noyce

Walking books which match an exhilarating ramble with a nearby pub serving good food and drink have become, over the past ten years or so, one of the most popular forms of footpath guides. Until now most of the walks in these guides have tended to be between 2 and 7 miles in length. Here is a pub walks book with routes that are a little longer at 7 to 12 miles, and a little more adventurous and challenging, leaving those who complete them with a real sense of achievement.

The 20 circular routes in this volume offer a wealth of places to see and explore. There is the spectacular Lapworth flight of locks on the Grand Union Canal; magnificent views of the Malvern Hills from Burton Dassett Country Park; a ramble past Bishops Bowl Lakes where dinosaur fossils were unearthed; and opportunities to visit the wonderful castles at Warwick and Kenilworth. Other routes take the walker to the village of Dunchurch, where on 5th November 1605 the Gunpowder Plot conspirators met to await news from Guy Fawkes; the lovely parish church of Holy Trinity in Stratford-upon-Avon, where William Shakespeare is buried; and to the medieval moated manor house of Baddesley Clinton.

Information such as how to get to the start, where to park and where to stop for refreshments is given, as well as public transport services. Numbers on the specially drawn sketch maps correspond with the numbered paragraphs in the text so that walkers can see at a glance where they are. The walk locations are: Polesworth; Kingsbury Water Park; Hartshill Hayes Country Park; Shustoke; Harborough Magna; Earlswood Lakes; Kenilworth; Baddesley Clinton; Dunchurch; Warwick; Napton on the Hill; Harbury; Alcester; Stratford-upon-Avon; Dorsington; Compton Verney; Burton Dassett; Ilmington; Brailes Hill; Long Compton.

Adventurous Pub Walks in Warwickshire

Railway Walks from Stratford
by: John Roberts

This guide describes nine short country walks up the Stratford on Avon to Birmingham line. Walk from one station to the next (or the one after) and catch a train back. The stops are all quite close together. Henley in Arden to Danzey is under four miles and Danzey to Wood End is 2.5 miles, so slow walkers and beginners can do one station, regular ramblers can do two or three and distance walkers can go the whole way to Shirley, about 27 miles.

This is pleasant easy walking through green fields with gentle hills, thick winding hedges and small woods. On the way you meet the Stratford Canal, the River Alne (clean enough for trout), the pretty village of Tanworth in Arden, wild and farmed deer, the placid ripples of Earlswood Lakes and the Saxon church at Wootton Wawen.

Full step by step directions and sketch maps and colour illustrations are provided together with practical information on completing the walks. The stations, in order from Stratford, are: Wilmcote, Wootton Wawen, Henley in Arden, Danzey, The Lakes, Wood End, Earlswood, Wythall and Shirley.
