North Cotswold Diamond Way

North Cotswold Diamond Way

by: Elizabeth Bell
The North Cotswold Diamond Way explores some of the best countryside of the north Cotswolds. It is 60 mile long and roughly a diamond shaped route, bounded in the north by Ebrington, in the east by Oddington, in the south by Northleach and in the west by Guiting Power. No part of the route is further than 11 miles from Stow-on-the-Wold. The route was devised specially to go through some of the many delightful small villages, with their golden stone cottages and welcoming country pubs. The terrain is varied and interesting, sometimes across open fields with stone walls, often through little spinneys or along the banks of streams. The hills are gently undulating and provide very pleasant views.
The guidebook provides a comprehensive description of the route starting from Moreton-in-Marsh, although you could start anywhere. Very detail sketch maps support the text to make route finding easy. The whole Way was re-surveyed in 2010 for this new edition of the guide. Information on accommodation and lunch stops is also included. Places visited include Aston Magna; Paxford; Ebrington; Chipping Campden; Broad Campden; Blockley; Hinchwick Manor; Crabs Corner; Toddington; Temple Guiting; Guiting Power; Notgrove; Northleach; Farmington; Bourton-on-the-Water; Wyck Rissington; Icomb; Bledington; Oddington; Addlestrop; Evenlode. The route was devised for the Ramblers' Association diamond jubilee and provides a great introduction to long distance walking.

The Mortimer Trail

The Mortimer Trail

by: Trevor Hulme and Abby Marshall
There can be few better places to walk in lowland England than in the Marches, the borderland country of England and Wales. This is where gentle pastures give way to steeply wooded slopes and open hill tops. Here you will find the Mortimer Trail, a 30 mile walking route from Ludlow to Kington which follows a succession of hills and ridges. It is so called because this was the heartland of the Mortimer family, holders of the most powerful of the Norman Earldoms. The trail passes through forests where tracts of broadleaved woodland give way to coniferous stands. The route descends from the high ridges to the water's edge of the Teme, Lugg and Arrow rivers where Kingfisher and Heron can be seen. Climbs are constantly rewarded by views of the Forest of Radnor, the Black Mountains, Clee Hills and the Malvern Hills.
The guide, printed on waterproof paper, describes the route in three sections supported by colour maps and photographs. There is a further section describing five additional loop walks branching off the Trail. Preliminary sections covering landscape, wildlife, ancient camps, Roman roads, and the Mortimer family put the Trail in context. The three sections are: Ludlow to Orleton Common; Orleton Common to Byton; Byton to Kington. The loop walks are at Yarpole; Wigmore; Lingen; Shobdon and Titley.

The Monarch's Way - Book 1

The Monarch's Way - Book 1

by: Trevor Antill
The Midlands from Worcester to Stratford-upon-Avon via Boscobel (175 miles). One of the best known stories in British history is that of the escape of Charles ll after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. For six exciting weeks, and hotly pursued by the parliamentary forces under Oliver Cromwell, he travelled first north through what is now the Black Country, then south through the Cotswolds and the Mendips to the South Coast, and finally along the South Downs to Shoreham where he made his escape to France. Loyally supported by his followers, many at great risk to their own lives, he was given shelter in places both great and humble, many of which still exist today - including the famous Boscobel oak tree.
Trevor Antill has now designed this long distance walk which closely follows the route taken by Charles and enables you to visit many places, maybe only previously known to you through the history books, and also takes you through some of the finest scenery in western and southern England.
In this, the first of three books, the route follows what was probably the most hazardous part of the King's route, from the historic city of Worcester to Shakespeare's Stratford-on-Avon. The guide gives detailed route instructions together with sketch maps and facinating facts about the King's journey and the places he visited.

The Monnow Valley Walk

The Monnow Valley Walk

by: Eira and Harry Steggles
The Monnow Valley walk is a linear walk of 40 miles through the valley of the River Monnow, from Monmouth, near its confluence with the River Wye, to the headwaters below Hay Bluff. From here the walk joins the Offa's Dyke Path National Trail, sharing the same route to the finishing point at Hay-0n-Wye. The walk uses paths which have been selected to provide a special blend of quietness, interesting features and a variety of scenery and terrain. The mixed farming encountered on the first half of the walk gives way to predominantly pastoral farming, and the whole length is interspersed with areas of woodland. In spring and summer the copses and flower meadows are carpeted with a rich flora which supports a wide variety of insect, bird and animal life.
The guide describes the route in 12 sections, each with a clear colour map showing the route and detailed route finding instructions. Interspersed with the direction text are background notes (in italics to avoid confusion) pointing out and describing features and places of interest. The section starting points are as follows: Monmouth; Rockfield; Tregate; Skenfrith; Box Farm Drive; Grosmont; Upper Sunnybank; Walterstone; Clodock; Michaelchurch Road; Black Hill; Craswall; Chwarel Ddu.

The subject of this book is the upper valley of the River Wharfe, from the boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park at Bolton Bridge to beyond Buckden: included is the quieter side valley of Littondale. Wharfedale is the most popular valley in the Dales, this being attributable not least of all to its accessibility. The West Yorkshire cities of Leeds and Bradford and their surrounding towns are but a modest distance away, and on summer weekends the banks of the river see as many sun-worshipers as ramblers. The 32 concisely described walks in this guide lead you to every corner of this classic district of the National Park. Ramble the Wharfe's leafy banks, and stride the breezy heights of Buckden Pike, Barden Moor and Simon's Seat.

It is not by chance that the splendid Dales Way follows the River Wharfe in the early stages of its journey to Windermere, for beside the Wharfe you will find some of the most extravagant scenery the Dales have to offer.
This book of walks is designed to introduce young people to the delights of the countryside and the joy of walking where the air is clean and Nature's beauty theirs to behold. The twenty walks are not unduly arduous, and will suit just as well those who are not so young, but who still like to get out among the meadows bright with wild flowers, fellsides that are a purple haze with heather, and in woodlands full of nesting birds and alive with birdsong. The high slopes resound to the calls of curlew, red grouse, skylarks, meadow pipits, golden and green plovers, haunting, evocative reminders of the beauty of our landscape heritage.
The walk locations are: Bolton Abbey; The Strid Woodlands; Beamsley Beacon; The Valley of Desolation and Simon's Seat; Barden Moor Reservoirs; Trollers Gill; Barben Beck; Loup Scar and Thorpe; Linton and Threshfield; Grass Wood; Kelber and Lea Green; Conistone Pie; Capplestone Gate; Great Whernside; Top Mere Road and Starbottom; Dowber Gill; Buckden Pike; Cray and Scar House; Hubberholme and Yockenthwaite; Linear walk along the Wharfe between Buckden and Beckermonds.

This well-illustrated guide contains directions and Ordnance Survey Explorer mapping for twelve new hill walks in the southern Yorkshire Dales. It offers a wealth of fascinating information about the natural landscapes and social history of this much-loved region, as well as groundbreaking routes that take walkers away from the main tourist areas to find solitude and beauty in the heart of the Dales.
This guide is number six of the 'Freedom to Roam' series published in partnership with the Ramblers' Association. These guides celebrate the arrival of our new legal rights to walk at will on mountain top, moorland and heath in England and Wales. By definition, these guides are less prescriptive than is usual and are designed to help you discover areas of the countryside which you haven't legally walked on before, advising you on routes you might want to take and telling you about places of interest along the way. In areas where it can be tricky to find routes or track down landmarks more detailed instructions are offered. Elsewhere directions are deliberately less precise, allowing you to choose your own path or line to follow. For each walk, however, there is a recommended core route. It follows that these guides assume competence with map and compass and some experience of hill walking.
The walk locations are: A Malham circuit; Fountains Fell; Horse Head Pass; Buckden Pike and Walden Head; Birks Fell and Firth Fell; Great Whernside and Kettlewell; Barden Moor; Simon's Seat; The Great Whernside Ridge from Nidderdale; Visiting Jenny Twigg (and Tib); Dallowgill; Ilton Moor and the Druid's Temple.

Walks Around Gunnerside

by Keven Shevels
The small village of Gunnerside lies in the heart of Swaledale, which is regarded by many as the most stunning of the Yorkshire Dales. Originally settled by the Vikings in the dark years following the end of the Roman occupation, Gunnerside has seen many changes over the millennia but nowadays it is perhaps best known for being one of the traditional, stone built little villages that inhabit these rugged dales. However, step away from the well-worn tourist trail to discover the country surrounding it and you will find a rich and varied heritage lying hidden amongst the fields and moors of this landscape.
In this series of eight walks starting from the village, the author explores the countryside surrounding it and the legacy that a hard and stern history has left behind. The walks include a mix of different types and distances, so within this selection you will find river bank and field path walks, moorland walks and even one that has a section visiting the high, boggy watershed between Swaledale and Wensleydale. Clear route instructions, sketch maps, grid references and Ferguson grading are included, together with colour photographs of points of interest.

by: Keven Shevels
Swaledale, regarded by many as the most beautiful of the Yorkshire Dales, is a magnet for walkers who come to sample its breath-taking scenery. Yet many walkers miss the harsh rugged hills that line the upper reaches of this dale and make the watershed that both surrounds and forms this iconic valley.
In a series of eight new walks the author takes a journey to the summits of these hills which range in character from the sheer bulk of Great Shunner Fell with the Pennine Way running across it's top to the rarely visited High Carl and Gibbon Hill which stands watch over the lower reaches of the upper dale. For those with a love of the wilder places this book will open up a new facet to one of our favourite walking areas.
Each walk chapter begins with a short description of the route plus practical data including distance, ascent, terrain, time and grid references. The route descriptions are clear and comprehensive and an outline sketch map is included. However, we would recommend taking the relevant OS Explorer map along with you on these walks. Sheet OL30 covers most of the walks in this book. Each walk has also been assigned a Ferguson Grading System rating and the book gives details of this system and how to interpret the grades. Black and white and colour photographs are included.
The walk locations are: High Carl and Gibbon Hill; Fremington Edge and Calver Hill; Rogan's Seat; Lovely Seat and Great Shunner Fell; White Mossy Hill and Nine Standards Rigg; Oxnop Common; Hills above Ravenseat; High Seat Ridge.

Green Networks of the Dales

Green Networks of the Dales

OUT OF STOCK

Price: £10.99

by: Colin Speakman
This is a very different kind of book about walking in the Yorkshire Dales. Rather than following the crowd by describing a series of circular strolls from popular car parks, it sets out to appeal to the serious walker who wishes to leave the car behind. The twenty walks featured are all linear routes of between twelve and twenty-two miles in extent that interconnect to form a walker's grid across the Dales. The result is a Green Network that offers infinite choice in a walker's landscape without equal. The walks also tie in with that other Green Network - the increasingly good-quality public transport services.
The guide is richly illustrated with the author's own colour photographs depicting the Yorkshire Dales in all its glorious variety and these visually complement the practical information provided by extracts from Harvey maps. Clear directions, fact file panels and supplementary text ensure you have all the information you need. Andy Ryland (Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority) says "Besides promoting linear walking, this is a fine book about the Dales and is beautifully written. It gets you to see the place properly and reveals many of the Dales hidden gems."
The walk locations are: Otley - Ilkey - Addingham - Skipton; Ilkley - Harrogate; Skipton - Grassington; Grassington - Pateley Bridge; Otley - Blubberhouses - Pateley Bridge; Pateley Bridge - Brimham Rocks - Fountains Abbey - Ripon; Kilnsey - Pateley Bridge; Buckden - Semerwater - Hawes; Skipton - Settle; Settle - Malham - Grassington; Hellifield - Malham - Buckden; Kettlewell - Aysgarth; Settle - Ingleton; Ingleton - Dentdale; Garsdale - Kirkby Stephen; Hawes (Garsdale) - Kirkby Stephen; Leyburn - Redmire - Bolton Castle - Reeth; Hawes - Askrigg - Bolton Castle - Redmire; Keld - Gunnerside - Reeth; Reeth - Marske - Richmond.

Three Peaks & Howgill Fells - Freedom to Roam

Three Peaks & Howgill Fells - Freedom to Roam

Price: £8.99

Quantity:

by: Sheila Bowker
This well-illustrated guide contains directions and Ordnance Survey Explorer mapping for twelve new walks through the Three Peaks and the Howgill Fells. Rejecting well-worn routes in favour of the open moors, the guide ventures into previously forbidden landscapes and provides full details of the wildlife, dramatic rock formations and historic settlements to be encountered along the way.
This guide is number eight of the 'Freedom to Roam' series published in partnership with the Ramblers' Association.
The walk locations are: Smearsett and Pot Scar; Thwaite and Norber; Crummack Dale and Moughton; Plover Hill and Penyghent; Park Fell, Simon Fell and Ingleborough; Whernside; Barbondale, Crag Hill and Barbon High Fell; Grisedale Pike and East Baugh Fell; The Calf; Wild Boar Fell; Wandale and Ravenstonedale; Weasdale, Randygill Top and Green Bell.
