Here is a very small selection of the new walking guides published
recently. These have impressed us either with the quality of the writing,
the choice of routes, or with exceptional layout and production quality.

Lakeland
Fellranger - Southern Fells
Published March 2009
Mark Richards' authoritative Fellranger series of guides is an astonishing
accomplishment, providing a comprehensive, up-to-date description of
every path, crag, fell and valley in the Lake District. The series is
the modern rucksack reference for the discerning fell adventurer, being
both inspirational and informative.
Each fell has its own dedicated chapter, and the variety of routes on
the fell are carefully depicted on Harvey maps and fellscape diagrams.
The scenic qualities of the landscape are illustrated by colour photographs
and detailed summit panoramas that help underpin the reader's appreciation
of these magnificent mountains. The Lakeland Fellrangers series combines
the personal and artistic touch found in Wainwright's guides, with everything
the modern walker needs. Author Mark Richards was one of Wainwright's
protégés and with the Fellranger books he proves he is a worthy successor.

Walking
in County Durham
Published September 2008
This second edition of this popular guide book now describes 450 miles
of walking routes and cycle-ways, exploring all corners of this varied
and historic landscape, wild moorlands, gentle countryside, riverside
walks, nature reserves, heritage sites, railway paths and the low cliff
coast. Routes pass Roman forts, ancient churches and castles. Solid
stone villages encircle extensive greens; and, on the high Pennines,
vast tracts of wild moorland are now 'open access.' There are 40 walking
routes plus 10 cycle-ways described with choices for all abilities.
The guide is copiously illustrated throughout with colour photographs
and each of the routes has a colour route map based upon OS Landranger
mapping. Packed with local information on the wildlife, geology, history
and industrial heritage of the county this guide is an indispensable
companion to exploring County Durham on foot.

new guide contains 22 circular walks which sample just about everything
the island's coastline has to offer and have been chosen with all walkers

more routes, perhaps as a less strenuous alternative to Snowdonia. Those
not familiar with the island, will find this book useful as a guide
to some of its most scenic and unspoilt locations. Each of the 22 walks
is described in detail with full directions, commentary on the surroundings
and a sketch map.

Drive
and Stroll in Cumbria and the Lake District
Published March 2008
On a fine day there is nothing quite like a drive to the country, followed
by a leisurely walk and a hearty meal in a good local pub or café. With
glorious countryside, inspiring views and fascinating reminders of a
historic past, Cumbria and the Lake District has a rich landscape of
wild moorland and mountains; quiet woods and hidden valleys; tumbling
waterfalls; sparkling rivers and lakes; and dramatic coastline. You
can savour the woods of Brandlehow, overlooking Derwent Water, linger
on the shore of Buttermere, or even join the gaze of Alfred Wainwright
himself from Orrest Head, but this guide shows there is a bigger picture
to be seen. It steps out of the straightjacket imposed by the Lake District
National Park boundary and explores the wider area of Cumbria, a heterogeneous
amalgam of Cumberland, Westmoreland, a bit of north Lancashire and a
corner of the West Riding of Yorkshire.
There are now 18 titles in this popular series as follows:
Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire; Berkshire; Cambridgeshire; Cotswolds;
Derbyshire and the Peak District; Devon; Hertfordshire; Kent; Lancashire;
Northamptonshire; North Yorkshire; Oxfordshire; Somerset; Suffolk; Surrey;
Warwickshire; West Yorkshire. You will find these guides in the appropriate
English counties section of the bookshop.
