Eden Way
Location: Cumbria
OS Maps: Explorer 315; Outdoor Leisure 5,19
Eden Vale is one of the most romantic parts of Cumbria, though not nearly as well known as the adjacent Lake District. Charlie Emett, the creator of this route and author of the guide below, follows the river to its source in wild Mallerstang where Uther Pendragon, King Arthur's father, was once Lord. On the way the river passes Carlisle, Appleby and the gorge of the Eden with its sandstone crags and sylvan walks. A unique feature of the walk is that it can be broken into sections using the popular Settle-Carlisle railway. The main towns and villages on the route are Carlisle (near the start), Wetheral, Armathwaite, Kirkoswald, Langwathby, Appleby, Warcop and Kirkby Stephen near Black Fell Moss, the source of the river Eden.
