Location: Highland, Scotland
OS Maps: Explorer 392, 400, 416
The Great Glen Way, is a 73 mile walk through some of the most spectacular scenery in Scotland. The Great Glen stretches from Fort William to Inverness and through it runs the Caledonian Canal with mountains towering on either side above the towns and villages. The route takes you at low level along by the canal with high level sections which skirt the contours of the mountains through forest and over fells on paths and tracks, giving unparalleled views of the Glen at evety turn.
Starting near the shore of Loch Linnhe in Fort William and within sight of Britain's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, the walk passes through Fort Augustus, Invermoriston and Drumnadrochit where nearby Urquhart Castle stands prominent overlooking Loch Ness and where visitors come to look for the monsters of this deep Loch. The route of the Great Glen Way takes you high above Loch Ness where you too can look down over the Loch and admire the views of the peaks and the glens that are part of this walk and part of Scotland. After walking through woodland, by loch side, over mountains and on a canal towpath you finally ascend to the terminus plinth at Inverness Castle to complete a memorable walk.
