The Wessex Ridgway, running for 220 km from Marlborough in Wiltshire to Lyme Regis on the Dorset Coast, takes the walker on a strenuous switchback across some of the country's finest chalk downland and through some of the best-preserved landscape in the south of England. It is also a landscape rich in archaeological sites and in literary associations - this is the heart both of the ancient kingdom of Wessex and of Hardy country. Here the walker will find the English Countryside at its very best and a host of villages that the twetieth century has left largely untouched.
