Allerdale Ramble

Location: Cumbria

OS Maps: Explorer™ OL6; OL4; 314

This ramble combines the spectacular mountain scenery of the Lake District, including an ascent of Skiddaw, with a coastal section along the flat coast of the Solway Firth. About half of the total distance is within the Lake District. One of the attractions of the route is the variety and contrast of landscape encountered. The route starts at Seathwaite, deep in the Lakeland fells and ends in the wide open spaces of Grune Point, just north of Silloth on the Solway Firth. A bigger contrast would be difficult to find.

Along the way you can enjoy one of the most scenic walks in England, from Seathwaite to Keswick, along the western side of Borrowdale and Derwent Water. You then climb Skiddaw, one of only four peaks in the Lake District over 3,000ft., visit the stately home of Mirehouse and the tiny ancient church of St. Bega. You can also discover Bassenthwaite Lake and the forgotten countryside to its north, explore the pretty market town of Cockermouth and valiant Maryport, rising again from industrial decline. Finally, stride along deserted sandy beaches to enjoy the timeless seaside charms of Silloth and the flora and fauna paradise of Grune Point.
