Capital RingLocation: Greater London OS Maps: Explorer 161; 162; 173; 174
The Capital Ring is a recently opened walking route encircling inner London, incorporating over 75 miles (120km) of footpaths through the capital's parks, woodlands and nature reserves. The route takes in some of London's most outstanding attractions, including the Thames Barrier, Eltham Palace and Richmond Park, and encounters little-known treasurers such as Oxleas Meadows, the Parkland Walk and Abney Park Cemetery. As the route is circular, and many points have public transport connections, this walk can be started at any convenient point. It is a route that can be explored in random sections on different occasions as time and inclination dictate. However, if you wish to follow the official guide and walk the complete route, the description starts from Woolwich on the south bank of the Thames and progresses in a clockwise direction. Some of the places visited include Falconwood; Eltham; Grove Park; Crystal Palace; Streatham Common; Wimbledon Park; Richmond; Isleworth; Boston Manor; Southall; Greenford; Harrow; South Kenton; Hendon; Highgate; Finsbury Park; Stoke Newington; Hackney Wick; Beckton District Park. Public transport will usually be the easiest and most practical means of getting to starting points. The route is designed to pass close to stations and passes, or has links to, 45 stations plus many bus routes. Most of the route is within Travelcard zones 2,3 and 4 (except Harrow-on-the-Hill - zone 5). The one-day off peak Travelcard gives great freedom of movement, allowing you to change from train to tube to bus to tram at will within greater London.
