Heart of England Way

Location: Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire

OS Maps: Explorer™ 205, 221, 232, 244

The Heart of England Way runs for almost 100 miles from Milford on the northern tip of Cannock Chase to Bourton-on-the-water in the Cotswolds. From the Chase the path curves south-east via Lichfield to the Tame Valley, then south-west through Meriden and Henley-in-Arden to Alcester, circling the eastern side of Birmingham but passing west of Coventry. The lower section runs south more or less, across the Vale of Evesham and the northern Cotswold Hills to Bourton-on-the-Water.

It runs through a most pleasant landscape with many beautiful views and in places feels deeply rural, but it does run around the eastern rim of one of England's biggest concentrations of people and industry. However, the Way in itself is not in the least urban, but is often in distant view or earshot of the sights and sounds of civilisation. This has the advantage of making the Way accessible for day walks with easy bus or train connections to numerous locations along the route.

During its 100 mile journey the Heart of England Way provides great variety, leading you through a series of quintessentially English landscapes. From the sandy heath of Cannock Chase you will cross rolling grassland, the Tame Valley, the woods and pastures of Shakespeare's Arden, the market garden country of the Vale of Evesham, the rich plain of the Avon and the limestone hills of the Cotswolds.

The Heart of England Way has links with the Staffordshire Way, Centenary Way, Cotswold Way, Oxfordshire Way and the Thames Path National Trail.
