Lyke Wake WalkLocation: North York Moors OS Maps: Explorer OL26, OL27 The Lyke Wake Walk is a 42 mile crossing of the North York Moors from Osmotherley to Ravenscar. The official starting point is the Lyke Wake Stone, just past the reservoir on the outskirts of Osmotherley and the finishing point the Lyke Wake Stone on Beacon Howes at Ravenscar. This route is usually undertaken as a challenge walk, making the crossing in a single non-stop walk of between 12 and 19 hours, depending upon fitness and walking conditions. As such it is generally considered a hard walk and a significant challenge to most people. Such organised crossings usually comprise seven sections with checkpoints and support teams in between. Each section presents a different challenge. The first two sections run concurrently with the Cleveland Way before the Lyke Wake turns off east along a disused railway track. Each year thousands of people attempt this challenge. Those who prepare before hand usually succeed, whereas those who do not suffer on route. Of course this route does not have to be tackled as a time trial endurance challenge. If you want more time to enjoy the spectacular views and glorious scenery you can make the journey over two days, stopping overnight at Wheeldale Lodge Youth Hostel, providing you book in advance. Bear in mind, however, that the journey will still not be easy, as you have 5,000 feet of total ascent, peat bogs and ravines to traverse and quite possibly strong winds and lashing rain to contend with.
