North Wales Path

Location: Wales - Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire

OS Maps: Explorer™ OL17, 264

The North Wales Path is a 60 mile (96km) route along the coast from Bangor heading east to Prestatyn. It is a flexible long distance path because it has good communications along its length making it easy to accomplish in separate day stages. As a continuous walk it can be completed in four days, but we would recommend making a week of it with seven leisurely day walks.

In its traverse of the North Wales Coast the path passes through diverse countryside which reflects the nature of this coast, from the high mountains to the flat plains and from small villages to towns. The walk begins in the city of Bangor and soon moves on to the northern flanks of the Carneddau. It traverses these to the moorlands above Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr before moving into the limestone country of the Great and Little Ormes. Promenades feature strongly in the middle section, with the occasional foray back into the hills such as above Llysfaen, then on to the coastal flood plain. Before its termination in Prestatyn, the ridge taken by Offa's Dyke is reached and its flanks are used to sneak you into Prestatyn without making you feel that you are entering into the town.

The walk has many interesting aspects and can provide pleasant excursions along a coast that may not initially be considered as an obvious choice for a long distance walk, but that it is full of history and variety is without doubt. The guidebook describes the route in seven day walks as follows:

Bangor to Abergwyngregyn - 11 miles
Abergwyngregyn to Penmaenmawr - 7.5 miles
Penmaenmawr to Conwy - 6 miles
Conwy to Llandudno - 8 miles
Llandudno to Llysfaen - 10 miles
Llysfaen to Rhyl - 8 miles
Rhyl to Prestatyn - 9 miles
