Two Castles TrailLocation: Devon; Cornwall OS Maps: Explorer OL28, 112, 111 The theme of this route is the linking of the two Norman castles at Oakhampton and Launceston. Of the two Launceston is probably the most impressive. Although only the keep remains, it is sited dominantly on a hill overlookng the town. The route initially follows the northern perimeter of Dartmoor decending to follow the Thrushel valley westward. Near Meldon look out for the Meldon Viaduct, an unusual metal structure which carried the London and South Western railway line over the valley. Meldon Reservoir makes a very attractive diversion from the Trail, being just 400 metres up a lane to the left off the Trail path. The route continues through Bridestowe, Lewdown and Lifton before reaching Launceston. It is possible to walk short sections of this trail as there is a bus route running parallel and connecting at several points. If you are planning to walk the complete Trail in two days we suggest Lewdown for an overnight stop. The guide has accommodation addresses.
