Westmorland Way

Location: Cumbria

OS Maps: Explorer™ OL19, OL5, OL7, OL41

The Westmorland Way is a superb 160km walk across the old county of Westmorland, from beneath the Pennines, through the Lake Disrict to Morecombe Bay. Beginning at Appleby-in-Westmorland this long distance path weaves a wonderful route throught the Lake District National Park, including Patterdale, Grasmere and Elterwater to finish at Arnside. You will discover delightful villages such as Askham, Beetham, Great Asby and Underbarrow; walk the beautiful lakeshore of Ullswater and the banks of the rivers Eden and Lowther, Brathay and Kent. From mountain pass to canal towpath, this is a walk of unparalleled variety where you will discover Roman roads and forts, castles, an abbey, pele towers and ancient churches and bridges.

Although Westmorland was regretably abolished as a county in 1974, its name lives on in the heritage of the area and in this outstanding walk. Old Westmorland's mountainous borders have protected it throughout history, resulting today in one of England's most unspoilt and scenic areas. Walking the Westmorland Way allows you to experience this beauty at first hand. The recommended itinery for this walk is a 7 day journey with overnight stops at Shap, Pooley Bridge, Patterdale, Grasmere, Troutbeck, Kendal and Arnside at the end of the walk. All of these locations have a choice of accommodation with varying degrees of luxury. Local TIC's can usually help with accommodation and you can get an accommodation list by email from walks@walkingpages.co.uk
