Saturday July 16th 2011 Oxfam's Trailwalker 2011, the UK's 'toughest team charity challenge' is a non-stop 100km endurance event along the stunning South Downs Way to raise money for Oxfam and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. Trailwalker, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, was born from a key part of the Gurkhas military fitness and team training regime. The walk along the South Downs is the equivalent distance of two and a half marathons and an ascent/decent equivalent to climbing Ben Nevis and Snowdon. The 100km walk starts in Queen Elizabeth Country Park near Petersfield at 6am on Saturday 16th July and finishes at Brighton Racecourse the following day. Teams of four walk through the night to complete the course in under 30 hours. The average time taken to date to complete the Trailwalker course is 24 hours. Rick Lay, Fundraising and Communications Manager at Oxfam said: "Trailwalker is a really exciting challenge and completing the course brings a huge sense of achievement - not many people can say they have walked two and a half marathons, non stop! You obviously need to train for Trailwalker, but the great thing is that people can do it at their own pace, so there's no real barrier to getting involved." Contact information: Oxfam Trailwalker is one of the world's toughest team charity challenges and one of the most rewarding. Teams of four have to walk - or run - the 100km course in a limited time. If you're after a charity challenge that takes in some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the UK then look no further! But it's not just a physical challenge: participants are also raising money to help overcome poverty and injustice around the world. It's a life-changing event. Oxfam's 100km charity challenges are becoming a global phenomenon: thirteen events in eleven different countries and counting.
